SAVE THE DATE: The 17th Annual Great Los Angeles Air Raid of 1942

February 23rd is going to be an exciting day for 1940s fans! The Fort MacArthur Museum in San Pedro, California will be hosting what has become one of their most popular signature events…The Great Los Angeles Air Raid of 1942.

The Great Los Angeles Air Raid of 1942 is an event that celebrates and attempts to recreate one of the most fascinating and controversial events in Los Angeles’ history. If you’re not familiar with the story there was a night in February 1942 when thousands of people were convinced that Los Angeles was being attacked from the air (some even thought from space)! Reports varied greatly from people thinking they saw bombers, a weather balloon and even an alien spacecraft! Many conspiracies followed and what really happened that night is debated to this day but this event provides a chance for people to remember or experience for the first time the feeling of those early, unsettling days of World War II.

This event takes you back in time and recreates the atmosphere of a social evening out in 1942 (in this case a big band dance party) that gets interrupted by the realities of war. It’s held outside under the stars at the museum and, in addition to delicious food and drinks, you’ll be able to dance to the music of The Fort MacArthur Officers Orchestra (FYI a swing dance class will be offered earlier in the day at 3:30pm for those who want to brush up on some vintage dancing techniques)! And be prepared to watch the skies! You never know what’s coming!

The Great Los Angeles Air Raid of 1942 event is a fundraiser for the Fort MacArthur Museum with activites from 3pm to 8pm and, side note, if you want the retro night to continue afterwards and don’t want your being “dressed to the nines” to go to waste The World Famous Cicada Restaurant and Club in the historic 1928 Art Deco Oviatt Building (listed on the National Register of Historic Places) in Los Angeles will have live music (Jack’s Cat Swing Quintet) and dancing starting at 8:30pm so that’s a great way to keep the party going on a fine Saturday night!

The Great Los Angeles Air Raid of 1942 is a MUST for 1940s fans in the L.A. area so grab your favorite swing dress or zoot suit and get ready for a night out on the town! For more information visit www.theairraid.com or www.ftmac.org.
